All Females in guardian homes may have up to four litters prior to being spayed, usually by their 6th birthday. Each dog is individually assessed before determining how many litters they will have. Most of our guardian females will have between 1-4 litters for us but will have no more than a total of 4 litters.
Our male guardian dogs, once approximately 10 months of age, also go through health and genetic testing, returning to visit us occasionally to breed or “honeymoon” with our females. Guardian puppies/ dogs may be any age, but most likely will be around 8 weeks old. During the first year, we will have most of her/his genetic health testing completed.

In the case of a female, Breeder will breed her for a total of 4 or less years , after which proof of spaying must be given to breeder. In the case of a male, the length of time will be determined by need and ability to breed. Be prepared for a home-visit and provide references prior to the dog/puppy being placed in your care. Be able to communicate with us, the breeder, about scheduling testing, mating, whelping, and anything else breeding related. If you ever need boarding we would love the opportunity to watch your dog as long it fits in with our family schedule. Once your dog is of age, has passed all of her health testing, and is ready to breed , you will be responsible for detecting a heat cycle and keeping her away from intact male dogs during this time. Once her heat starts, guardian families are responsible for taking her to our vet in Lincoln, NE. She will stay at the vet until she’s bred, which could be up to a week. Once she’s bred, you will pick her up and take her home and care for her during her pregnancy. She will then come back to our kennel a week before she is due to whelp her litter, and will stay with us until her litter is 3-4 weeks old and the puppies are ready to be weened. Arrangements can be made for guardian families to visit during this time! We work closely with our vet to determine exactly when to retire them.
Guardians must follow breeder’s nutritional guidelines, exercise the dog appropriately, pay for routine veterinary care and food related expenses and pay for sick visits to the veterinarian. If you are a guardian for a male dog, you must be willing to drop him off for 3-5 days for breeding unless arrangements are made ahead of time for us to pick him up. Sometimes we are able to come to you for a breeding so you must be able to meet with us. The guardian home is responsible for the transportation of the dog to us for breeding, having litters or for health testing. If you are a guardian for a male dog, you must be willing to drop him off & pick him for 7 days for breedings, which would be 1-3 times per year, depending on our needs, when he is between 1-5 years old. Guardian dogs will keep their given name although you may have as many nicknames for them as you like. Guardian dogs must respond to their given name which is not be changed.
